Are we sure it's pain? Without the title, I think I would have thought she was concentrating (or drifting away) on her book, maybe memorizing... Not sure. But I don't think "emotional" would have been the first thing that came to mind.
Just my 2c - the beauty of a photo like this is that it's open to interpretation!

My impression was the same. I thought she was either pondering her studies, daydreaming, or weary from having to study on such a day...
I do like the composition and selective DOF on the first!
I definitely prefer the processing on the first one as well. Since I'm not seeing the full sized version, I can't see the look on her face quite as well as you did while processing. That said, I get more of an 'exhausted' vibe from her than sadness. She looks like a very tired and overworked college student. I could probably be convinced of "lonely" as well, considering behind her and to the left there is a group of friends sitting in the grass chatting away. Add in the group of people standing/walking in the back and to the right, lonely is a definite possibility. Very good capture, nmahooch!
I pretty much agree w/ everyone, though I don't mind your processing on the second shot at all--I'd take that w/ a grain of salt though as my color processing needs work
I agree also that I see lost in thought rather than anything more dramatic and on the second shot, I see "two seconds before it dawns on her I'm taking her photo" .
