Lightroom & Smugmug when creating different catalogs?

I've started creating different catalogs in Lightroom 3 as a suggestion for speeding up the LR program and not having all my images (thousands) in one LR catalog (potential for crashes). In other words, each shoot has its own LR Catalog. But what I have noticed is my Smugmug settings do not carry over to the new catalogs I created. I have to set up Smugmug for every catalog. Is there a template or a way for lightroom to keep the same settings as I have with my first catalog or do I have to make a separate catalog just for Smug and import the photos to that catalog every time I need to upload to Smug?

Like you said, the settings are per catalog, nothing can be done about it. But by having multiple catalogs, you are defeating the purpose of a DAM. You can do searches, you first need to find the right catalog.

I have just passed the 100,000 mark on a 2 cpu, 3 gb ram and it's still good:
