Sub-Domain Question

I was thinking of hosting a Wordpress blog on a server I already have - it has other sites already running on it. In fact, the domain I'm now using on SmugMug use to be on that server. Anyways, I was wondering if there are any problems with creating a sub-domain on that server and pointing to it from my custom smugmug domain for blog purposes?

IE - My site is http://www.RacingHistorian.com This points to my SmugMug site.

If I were to create a /blog directory in my home directory on the server, and create a sub-domain called blog.RacingHistorian.com, would that work without problems with SmugMug and a custom domain? That way I could just link to the blog.RacingHistorian.com site for my blog, and link back to SmugMug for everything else. I'm in process of getting all my domains of GoDaddy.com and move them to Hover.com which doesn't obliterate you with spam sales every inch of the site when you just want to make a simple change. :boid

I currently just have custom HTML in a gallery as a makeshift 'blog' but I'm looking for something more.

I did see the announcement with the partnership with Photography Blogsites - I'm just not willing to pay more for it.

Thanks,
Scott

    Hi Scott,

If you can host the blog on your server then you can create a subdomain for it such as blog.RacingHistorian.com. You cannot create RacingHistorian.com/blog. Just make sure you don't modify the existing CNAME or A record that are for your SmugMug site and this should work just fine.

When you mentioned the /blog directory on your server, did you mean the hosting account wants you to create a folder for each domain? If so, that is the right way to do it. But it is probably /blog within the hosting account's main domain, right?

Hosts use that method for sectioning off accounts to add additional domains. So you might have a main account under mydomain.com and at mydomain.com/racinghitorian.com are the files for racinghistroian.com

I would treat the new subdomain the same way and use a namng structure so you know that it is not /blog at the main "mydomain.com" but a separate domain.

It might be better to call that folder /racinghistorianblog just to clear up any confusion. That folder name would never be public, just used by the host to know where to point that new subdomain.
