I think "permission" has to do with your computer settings not the evil empire. :D

Please correct yourself, your settings are rubbish.

I remember when I used to do tech support. I'd say over 90% of problems were just from the user.
    basflt wrote: »

I tried them, none of them really worked that well for Nikon files. Not sure about .dng or .cr2.
There was one that I didn't try, supposedly it did work, because you have to pay $15 for it. And of course I don't like Adobe products.

make sure you use correct version [ 32bit or 64bit ] [ windows version ]

if you accidentally used a wrong one , remove it before trying other ones . importand !

    also
    sometimes a reboot is required

google is your friend , use it

you dont need to access them
just install them in the correct location
then windows will recognice em and use them

the message says nothing , if you are administrator

The difference, AFAIK, the Microsoft codec pack doesn't require you to use open another program to see your thumbnails. I mean, I could of viewed my thumbnails with ViewNX too!

    • Open Explorer, navigate to photo directory, view thumbnails.
    • Open IrfanView, navigate to photo directory, view thumbnails.
They're the same in that respect. An advantage of Irfanview is that it can do many things Explorer can't do.

Well, I use win7 32bit. I do all of my stuff in Explorer. The only thing I use other programs for is editing (PS CS4). So, I'm used to getting previews of my JPEGs and just the icon for RAWs. That's how I tell them apart (I shoot RAW + JPEG; I have 2 copies of each photo). I'm not sure whether or not to get this update. I won't be able to tell them apart easily, but I'll be able to see my RAWs after I delete the JPEGs (I delete the SOOC JPEGs after culling). So, I can't decide.

    Someone help me decide! ear.gif

One thing that was "not" clear at the Microsoft download site is that if you have a 64 bit operating system you "must" use the 'AMD64' version in order to see any benefits. Yes, that version works fine with Intel processors and no, you do not have to restart the machine afterwards.

in folder options , deselect Hide extensions for known file types

I gave it 5 minutes and still could not see my nefs...then restarted and they were there.....maybe just me........pretty much the same with the dng codec...I got these pretty blue lake and mtn landscape but no actual thumb of MY DNG...then I cliked on one and it started to show up when windos decided to wriggle and shake then closed...2nd try all fine......it just freaked trying to resolve the first time........

All good now .........really likeing this as I can cull larger images than I can in lightroom.....
