Very slow uploads?

I'm aware of the outage from yesterday and I understand it has now been resolved; however, I'm experiencing *very* slow uploads over my 6000/600 DSL line (e.g., would normally take about 45-60 seconds to upload a ~4MB file, now is taking several minutes *per file*). I've verified I'm not experiencing upload problems over my line (i.e., speed is testing out OK), but using Star Explorer or any of the upload tools on the Smugmug site is crawling.
Anyone else?

hi welcome to dgrin
i just tried uploading a bunch of 4mb files, i'm in a starbucks on tmobile wireless - no problems they took about 30 seconds each. i used the beta loader, and the one-at-a-time loader. mac, tiger, firefox and mac, tiger, safari.
sorry you're having troubles...
check your connection perhaps?

Thanks for the welcome :
It's really weird - all other functions, including uploads to other destinations (e.g., my ISP, my work email, etc.) seems to work just fine (exactly what I'd expect for a 70kpbs or so upload) - it's only Smugmug that's giving me trouble. I've tried from all three PCs on my home network (two wireless, one wired) and have also rebooted my router, with no effect. Never had this problem before
Maybe it will get better later. . .
Hello~
I hate that my first post here is about an issue with Mac uploading!
This site is terrific and I am thoroughly enjoying the ability to customize my area. I am; however, having extreme difficulty uploading photos and receive an error message almost every time I try, unless it's a *really* tiny file, like the one I created for my page's header.
I'm on a Mac, running OSX 10.3.9, Safari 1.3.1, and according to Apple's Software Update, everything is as current as available. I have corresponded with someone in your customer support who seemed to think it was an Apple Java issue in an older release.
At one time, I was able to load without difficulty and it's only very recently since I learned a little about CSS and decided to customize that I've attempted to upload additional photos. Once in a great while I can get an entire photo uploaded, but most err out, so I've been forced to keep deleting them and crop the ones that make it 80% of the way. It appears not to be size related either, as some of the older uploads were twice the size of some of the more recent files.
In any event, it's getting really frustrating and I'm willing to back off versions of software if I can do so and it would allow me to upload without continual issues. I'm leary of upgrading to Tiger because of the potential problems that have been reported with it and CS, and would prefer to back out of a Java update that might be the catalyst for the upload issue.
I LOVE having the ability to customize and there is a virtual treasure chest of great information here that makes it possible.
Thanks in advance for any assistance or ideas.
Michele

hiya
are you using the aqua mac uploader? i've been on that for months with no issues whatsoever. the other one that works well for me is the beta uploader (using safari).
please specify which exact uploader you're using and we'll try and help. thanks!

I've never had a problem in Panther and now Tiger. I've used the standalone mac uploader, the universal uploader using Safari...all no probs.
How good are you at running basic maintenance? If you're not up on that, give that a try.

Thank you both for the speedy replies!
The Mac uploader I've always used is on the Mac Lovers upload page and titled, Stand-alone OS X uploader. Is this the "Aqua" one to which you referred? Where is the beta Safari uploader? I'd like to give another option a try. I have deleted the stand alone uploader from my system, including it's plist entry and reinstalled to no avail. It may be a Java issue, because when I tried to use the Mac Java uploader on the same page and clicked on that option, the applet apparently never ran because the screen was blank, and stayed that way, despite waiting several minutes for something (anything) to happen.
Insofar as Mac maintenance, my cache is regularly emptied, and permissions verified/repaired. I will assume (that word causes me to cringe) that CRON is doing it's cleanups at some time or another because my system is usually left on for a couple of days (varies) before shutdown and the cycle repeated. I will review your very helpful website (thanks for the link!) and perform any other cleanups as necessary. Backup is covered.
I cannot help but feel my problem is related to one of the several recent (last month or so) "upgrades" that the Apple Software Update has determined I "needed." Plus, I am quite certain that one of them was a Java upgrade. Is there a way to back out of an update?
Thanks again for the help. As soon as I find out where the other upload option is located, I'll give that a whirl.

try the beta uploader, with safari. it works a treat. when you click "add photos, you'll see this menu choice:
and, stay tuned becuase there are improvements on the way to the standard mac uploader, too.

Probably. But why waste your time? Upgrade to Tiger...it's about time!

received. When it did say received, twice, none showed up in gallery. Finally I just used standard
upload and it worked. Maybe beta broke with new changes? All this in the last hour. NS7.2

I'm not on a system that I can check it here...but you DO know that you have to leave the window untouched? Don't close it, don't redirect it...just leave it alone and if you must browse do it in another window.

Well, it's looking more and like my system is the problem, as neither other option I tried worked.
1st.
I tried clicking the "add photos" button in the gallery into which I wanted the photo uploaded. Screen came up fine and I was able to select the browse and select the photo I wanted. It's path name was correct as displayed, but when I actually went to upload, here's the error message I received:
Upload Error, The URL to upload to is not valid. Unable to continue.
2nd.
I tried the beta uploader which appeared to work, and was *exceptionally* fast. It indicated it was uploading the photo, went to 100%, and then I received this error message:
We're sorry, but we didn't receive any photos.
Please try again.
So, neither of those uploaded even a percentage of a photo, whereas the Aqua uploader will always load a portion of the photo, but very, VERY rarely the entire photo.
So, just as a test, I decided to try the same photo that just failed with the two uploaders noted above, this time with the Aqua uploader.
It UPLOADED! This is the same photo I tried to upload at least three times within the last day (the partial photos are still in one of my galleries) and this is the first regular size photo I've been able to upload since this issue started.
So, feeling brave, I attempted to load a much larger photo, again with the Aqua uploader. Yet again, it loaded, 100% of the photo.
It seems apparent that something is being kickstarted by either one of the methods: 1st or 2nd, that is enabling the Aqua uploader to complete its upload successfully. Previously I received an invalid end of file error message with virtually every upload.I guess I'm going to have to take a rather circuitous route to uploading my photos until this mystery gets solved.
Got any idea about what is being "kickstarted" or awakened as a result?
This seems really weird, but I know there's an explanation. Thanks again for helping so quickly. It may be the Rube Goldberg method, but at least now I can get my photos into my galleries.

After reading these comments, I have to add my frustration with uploading and having photos displayed. The uploaders are all terrribly slow for me (on a Mac OS 10.4.2 and Safari 2.0.1 and now on Wifi) and the only one that worked with speed was the Beta which is now temporarily "dead." The Stand-Alone Aqua doesn't function for me either. One photo upload and it goes "dead."
I love the features of this site (long time pbase.com user here) and am on a trial basis but not being able to quickly upload and have my photos appear (been having "No Photo" signs appear also) is making me rethink whether I want to sign up full-time.
Just my thoughts. I hope they get everything fixed.

hi peg - thanks for reporting - can assure you that as a long time user (nearly 3 years) this is not the norm - and that the engineers are working on this... i do hope you will stick it out. thanks

I can't use any uploader either, Michelle. And it's not for lack of trying!
Think I'm going to bow out of using Smugmug til this issue gets resolved, which I'm sure it will.

i'm terribly sorry for your difficulties - i've contacted the help desk again for you and i'm sure one of the guys will be along soon.

I sent sent a message to help about this issue. Here's what has happened.
After trying unsuccessfully to load photos for two days I decided to try the Drag and Drop Beta Uploader with a smaller size photo. I was surprised when the message informed me I had successfully uploaded 6 photos !!! I checked my gallery and the photo I uploaded was nowhere in sight. Before the upload the gallery had exactly 12 photos. After the upload there are 144 photos !!! Instead of one page with 12 photos, I now have 12 pages of the same 12 photos. Yikes!
On top of that, I cannot delete them because the bulk deleter shows ony 12 unique photos, not 144. I cannot get rid of the additional 11 pages unless I wipe out the entire gallery and start over, which I cannot do because I cannot upload.
I'm going to walk away from this for a week and see if anything gets straightened out. This is just too frustrating.

those 12 to a new gallery, then deletle bad one. May be a quick work-around. Much quicker
then re-uploading.

This is sunday night, is anyone else having this problem?
ginger
This is unusual for smugmug. Very frustrating, though.

As Andy says, it is not the norm.
There is definitely a problem with the Universal Drag and Drop in some browsers (works fine in IE for me, broken in Firefox), and we are working on it.
For those of you who are saying they can't get anything to upload though, the other uploaders (and 3rd party ones like: http://wiki.shahine.com/default.aspx/MyWiki.SendToSmugMug ) should still work. If you are having specific problems on those, please fire an email to the help desk and we can hopefully walk you through them.
I don't have any sort of idea on when the uploader will be fixed. As soon as we know what the problem is, it should be fixed pretty quick.
