The Mrs found a caterpillar on a weed underneath the apple tree last week, and it has taken me a while to get an ID, but it appears to be a Flame Carpet larva (Xanthorhoe designata). There are two generations of this moth during the year. One in May and June, and a second in August.
It is fairly common throughout most of Britain, occupying hedgerows, gardens and woodland, believe it or not, but this is the first (and only) one I have seen.
It feeds on various Cruciferous plants, such as rape and cabbage Brassica spp.
It appears to have made it's way past a larval sac of some other insect, paused, and decided to stay there!
The ID came from Ian Kimber, a moth specialist.
