what is the filename length limit in sitemap?

Hi,

I've followed multiple seo advices and uploaded my files like this:
2011-03-26-0015-fish-on-banan-leaf-kuala-lumpur-malaysia-r2.jpg

Yet, as I see it in the sitemap, the filename becomes like this:
... /L/2011-03-26-0015-fish-on-banan-L.jpg

What is the algorithm that crops the filenames? What is the limit that will be shown for sure? Shall I skip the date part (and put it in the end of the name)?

Thanks for the advice,
Istvan

    Hi Istvan,

If you keep your filename below 30 characters, you should be fine. Longer filenames will be shortened as you can see. Note if you want to have your photos arranged by filename in the gallery, don't remove the photo number from your filename.

In my case, the filename and the date taken is the same, therefore I will not loose much, because either way I will have the same order. Thanks for the answer!

Can we change filenames after upload? I uploaded my photos in normal DSC.... Nikon format, and now what, Uncle Google wants juice - can I change filenames to give it him? Or filenames are replaced by giving photos a caption?

Can't change filenames on SmugMug - you can reupload though with new filenams.

I've created a utility that renames the files in a friendly format from the title / description / location information. You can access the source codes here, but I need to document and publish it officially. Stay tuned.
