Kath, they're Marmalade Hover flies. I posted a few more in a couple of other threads a few days ago. They're totally harmless and actually quite friendly. They'll happily land on your hand if you put it out.

We have hover flies here too, a bit different, but I did wonder if they might be. The ones here disappear if you get too close to them.

Nice trio! Agreed that hovers are friendly. I had one hang out with me on the deck while I read a book once. Silly thing kept landing on the chair arm then hovering. Land. Hover. Land. Hover. It stayed for an hour or so. Silly thing.
