Gallery, category, subcategory question

I haven't visited my own SmugMug site for a very long time. Now that I want to resume populating my galleries again with new photos, I've run into the same old problem that I had before. My galleries and categories are all over the place and don't make sense to visitors. I need to re-arrange them so they're in a logical format that visitors (and myself) can understand.

I asked this question a long time ago over on the SmugMug site, but was given a link to the frequently asked questions page or maybe the beginners' basics page (I don't remember which specifically) and an explanation, that I'm embarrassed to say, I really didn't understand. So I'm asking the same question again, but need step-by-step instructions that even a computer illiterate old man can wrap his head around.

So here's what I understand. You have categories, sub-categories, and galleries right? Am I limited to just those three options? Let me put it to you another way--say I want a category of AIRPLANES, then under that sub-categories of AIR SHOWS and SPOTTING. But under each of those, I might want, say a certain air show that I attended that may have spanned over fours days. I want to place photos of EACH DAY in its own gallery under a certain air show, under the AIR SHOWS sub-category. Make sense? Or here's another one. Lets use ANIMALS as the next example. I might want PETS and OTHER. Under OTHER, I might want ZOO VISITS and WILD. Then under either ZOO VISITS or WILD, I might want individual galleries selected by date and or location.

Do you guys see where I'm going with this? I really don't want to resume populating my SmugMug site before I've rearranged or straightened out what's already in there.

I appreciate everyone's understanding and patience with this. And forgive me if this has been asked before. But some people need a little more hand-holding than others.

Smitty

Smugmug has categories, sub-categories and galleries.

Categories can contain either sub-categories or galleries.

    Sub-categories can contain only galleries.

    Galleries can contain only photos.

    So, you can have:

    Airplanes
    ....Air Shows
    ........Akron Show - Day #1
    ........Akron Show - Day #2
    ........Akron Show - Day #3
    ........Akron Show - Day #4
    ....Spotting

In this example, "Airplanes" is a category, "Air Shows" is a sub-category and "Akron Show - Day #n" are galleries.

The use of a category is mandatory. The use of a sub-category is optional depending upon whether you want the extra level of classification or not because galleries can be directly in a category if you want. One important thing to remember is that photos can only be in a gallery (not in a category or sub-category). A gallery can then be placed in either a category or a sub-category.

Thanks JFriend. Let's see if I understand this right. I can have as many galleries as I want under a sub-category? I just have to be careful how I name them. I guess I'm making this way more complicated than it needs to be. It still seems to me that I need a higher category above, like AIRPLANES, then AIR SHOWS and SPOTTING would be under that. Examples of what I feel like I'm limited to are below.

    Category - Air Shows
    Sub-category - 2011 Quad City Air Show
    Gallery - Day 1, Thursday 16 June 2011
    Gallery - Day 2, Friday 17 June 2011
    Gallery - Day 3, Saturday 18 June 2011
    Gallery - Day 4, Sunday 19 June 2011

But what if I wanted to break Day 4, Sunday 19 June 2011 into smaller galleries like BLUE ANGELS, P-51 MUSTANG, etc. See where I'm going with this? I feel I need a sub-gallery.

    Category - Airplane Spotting
    Sub-category - Omaha Airport
    Gallery - 7 August 2011
    Sub-gallery - Boeing 737
    or
    Sub-gallery - United Airlines
    Sub-gallery - American Airlines

    Category - Airplane Spotting
    Sub-category - Boeing 747
    Gallery - FAA Reg. N12345
    Sub-Gallery - Omaha Airport
    Gallery - FAA Reg. N54321
    Sub-Gallery - Lincoln Airport

OK, so I just made a gallery called THURSDAY (16 JUNE 2011), which is under the Sub-category of 2011 QUAD CITY AIR SHOW, which itself is under the category AIR SHOWS. But I'm also currently populating another gallery called FRIDAY, 17 JUNE 2011, which is somehow UNDER the sub-category 2011 QUAD CITY AIR SHOW, but not IN that sub-category.

Please look at the link below so you can see what I'm talking about.

I'll wait to see what happens when it's done loading pix. Maybe it's displayed differently when it's being populated? Otherwise, how do I move it into the same spot next to THURSDAY, when it's done? Or did I do FRIDAY right and have to move THURSDAY next to it? I'm so confused!

Couldn't quite edit the post above. But I figured it out. Got THURSDAY and FRIDAY in the same sub-category like they should be. Maybe I do have this figured out after all?
