Photo Assignment #1

Hi you'll,

I'm stealing an idea from Mike Lane. In the "are we too rigid" thread in the Theory Techniques forum he suggested that we have a photo assignment room. I think it will be fun to try and if it doesn't work out we all can blame Mike. :evil

I will give the first assignment and you post your suggestions for future assignments here. The first assignment is wildife in the air with context. I want the subject that is in the air to be part of a larger scene. I don't want full frame flight shots like this

24204914-L.jpg

I'm looking for context like in these shots
26439745.jpg

26745662.jpg

21365449.jpg

25169656-L.jpg

The rules are that the picture must be taken on or after October 14, 2005.
I will start a thread next Friday, October 21 where everyone can post their assignments and we can chat about it. Please post no more than 2 shots. There are no prizes and no winners. The only way to lose is to not participate.

Ahhh Harry....you are such a brilliant, intellegent and talented moderator. Your work captivates us all. Those amazing blue waters blow our minds. Your camera equipment is truly wonderful stuff...and your pizza expertise ...just mind boggling. Wait..did you say there are no prizes or selection into a finals competition? ne_nau.gifheadscratch.gif Nevermind. I take all that back.

Please refrain from using the words "work" or "job" in the threads Harry starts, he may leave the room.rolleyes1.gif

Good idea Harry, hopefully I can get out and get some shots in the mornings. Changing to second shift has really cut into my photo time.

    Hey Angelo,

From your response I detect some confusion. All it means is that one element of the shot will have some bird, animal, insect etc. in the air as in the example shots I posted. It could be a bird flying on a beach, a dog jumping in the air, a monkey flying, a squirrel jumping from branch to branch, etc. What I'm not looking for is a full frame shot of a bird in flight for example.

The idea is to use your compositional skills to frame a scene with one element being some wildlife in the air. birds of course jumps into mind but there are many other possibilities. A full frame shot does not contain the same compositional challenge and it also it would limit the assignment to DSLR shooters with long glass.

I think some of us know that I do this kind of shot very well. In fact, I do it better than just about anything I do.

So I spent 6 hrs walking in a wildlife area w wide open marsh vistas. I didn't get much for this assignment and I lost some trying to get my "shorter" lenses on. Or I lost good shots WITH the shorter lenses on, meaning the 17-40 and the 70-200. I am going to try again this AM. It seems to me that my good shots come to me as god wants to deliver them. Whatever I go out for, I usually get something else.

Deer should fly, really they should, with a compelling background of course.

I think the "birds" are going to sit on me for a week. Of course I could probably go downtown and get pigeons, if I had an accomplice. I don't, he works straight thru til after the time to discuss and post.

Or I could go find a shrimp boat, but that seems such a cop out.
And even that is not a guarantee.

The ones I had great hope for this AM, they are too busy. At the shrimp boat area. That is with the lens wide open and shut down a bit. So it would be back to McClellanville, the smaller town.

You know I get my shots over a long period of time. Some of my best of this type of shot, it was a sometime thing. In other words, twice in 6 months of going to Magnolia have I found a bird in the really pretty lakes, so these shots that look sensational are not that easy to get.

I have a few stork shots that might work. A couple of non flight stork shots, too, that I love, but some more dramatic stork in the air shots that I took at the very end today.

I am exhausted from looking through this stuff. Just exhausted, am hoping for a nap, NOW!

ginger (that was why I did not choose to go back to Magnolia, it would be too chancy. twice in 6 months, that is not a terribly good average. And when I think about it, the birds were not in flight.)

I would think the shrimp shots would do it, at McClellenville, if it is the same as last week.

    OOOOOOOOOOOOHhhhhhhhh, tired.

    night,

ginger (if I sleep maybe I can go out again later)
