Hi,
Lately I have been getting tons of solicitations. I googled my business name (Chip Phillips Photography), and many directories now have my personal phone number listed with my business. I am trying to find out where they might have gotten that info so I can stop this. Is my phone number associated with my website here, and is it available to the public?
My site is:
www.chipphillipsphotography.com
I don't have my phone number listed anywhere on my site.
Thanks.
Chip

A phone number is available in the public DNS information connected with your domain. You can see the info that is publicly available here: http://www.networksolutions.com/whois-search/chipphillipsphotography.com. Since it looks like you registered with joker, you should probably look into their options for keeping some of this info private.

Thanks for the response John. I checked out my account over at Joker and don't see my phone number listed anywhere. I have sent them an email requesting to delete it. Chip

I think you'll find that domain registration requires a bunch of contact information, including a phone number (my domain registration has one). But, most registrars have ways of keeping some of that information out of the public's eyes where they serve as an intermediary. I think you'll have to look into what "features" Joker offers in that regard rather than just ask them to delete your phone number.

Well, they said there was no option to take care of this problem. So, I think I successfully changed it to a false number so hopefully this is a get-around. Thanks for the help on this. Chip

False information on domain registration can lead to loss of your domain.

I actually don't use any type of private dns registration and haven't had much of this until about the last two weeks. I don't answer any calls I don't recognize and I'll google an unfamiliar number before calling it back as that can also trigger automatic list opting-in.

The companies that allow these people to use their services should be charged by the customer each time they do this. They have a responsibility to not allow their services to be used to harrass others. I get yahoo spam all the time from their hacked accounts or spammer accounts and yet they spam folder my legitimate emails to users. It gets really annoying.

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) requires up-to-date and accurate contact information for every domain name. You have to put in the information when you register and the domain host has to make that information available. You'll also get an e-mail annually (that they have to send) requesting that you check the information and make sure it's still correct.

The only way around this (besides lying and risking losing your domain) is to pay for a domain privacy service where the registrar effectively registers the domain to themselves (listing their own contact information) and then leases the use of it to you for whatever amount of time you want to have the domain registered for.
