What do you think of this? I'm still messing with it but what do you think so far?

Thanks!

I like the processing & it seems to me to be in the Frank Miller style, but take that with a grain of salt, because apparently the style I picked up Googling Frank Miller doesn't hit his style head-on. I like that the kid with the ball is in color, but kinda think it might look better if he were also more processed, and maybe provide a touch of separation around his head or make his head a touch lighter (or the other kids' shirt a touch lighter), as it seems to me to really blend into the other kid's shirt to the point of not really being able to make it out well.

    Thanks for the comments!

I did what I could with his head but there just wasn't much I could do because his hair is black. I was hoping his ears would help to define his head :)

Here is my final submission. I like they way it looks and for this round that's all I could hope for!
I did have a blast playing with the different processing techniques! I learned allot!

Here's my C&C. Even if you nail the processing, I think you have to nail the subject matter too. Not sure if a kid's sporting event is something Miller would ever draw/style.

    Thanks for the C&C!

For me he takes the real and makes it unreal. I gave up trying to find the perfect subject matter because he is all over the place when it comes to a subject IMO. One of the images I liked most when I was researching was done by a fan of his in his style. It was of Charlie Brown playing baseball. That gave me this idea even though it wasn't done by Frank Miller just in his style.

But in the end I'm sure you are 100% right and most wont like this because it is just a kids basketball game. But I am happy with it and really enjoyed the process of creating it!

Not to mention you beat me to the punch with my first Idea of a cemetery! (yours rocks by the way!) :D

Everybody will have their own opinion and mine is usually in the minority. That said, I'm sure Miller would never draw anything to do with a ballet either, but that's what I'm going with because I don't like blood & guts, violent, or dark & evil type things, which seems to be the type of subject matter Miller does. You didn't by chance catch a photo of a fight during the game, did you? (JK, JK!!) Otherwise, you could find a Miller cartoon that you can somewhat mimic (that's what I'm doing).

The most important thing is that you are happy with your work and comfortable entering it into the challenge. That doesn't mean it will do great or poorly, but being satisfied with what you've accomplished is the challenge, getting votes is just an added benefit. :)

Jeromy, after I wrote my comment, it occurred to me that I'm not really a Miller expert. I saw Sin City and 300, but I haven't read any of his comics. Therefore, I'm going to agree with you and say the process is what makes it worth it, and everybody should be happy with the idea of Zombie Basketball.

I haven't researched Miller at all (didn't have to), but I get the style concept from looking at the entries. This one is really different. I like the audience. thumb.gif

I like your subject and the processing.

I've been paying some attention to the parameters of this challenge as one of the potential voters. I appreciate the comments Sean made early on about this challenge involving telling a story (or slice of a story), how one uses light, and nailing high contrast exposure to get "the look", etc. So I've read this as Frank Miller style of processing along the lines of Ghinson's comment. When the subject matter is also in sync with Frank Miller, it may help sell the entry, but I don't think it's essential.
