I was in NYC on Thursday down around the 14th street area on the West side and my D700 and 28-300VR had lots of fun. Here are some of the sights we took in:

I like #1 - question if you don't mind. what iso were you shooting with on that shot? i recently just picked up a new 28-300VR and until i go to the D700 FX i've not been real happy with low light shots due to my D80's poor ISO handling (500 or so is my max that i will accept the noise level on).

Thanks, no problem sharing. How do you like the 28-300? I got it for the D700, but use it as my walk around lens on my D5000 -- I really love the lens, and I have a lot of better quality glass - but its range makes is great.

Here is the EXIF data for shot number one:

    Camera Nikon D700
    Exposure (1/100)
    Aperture f/5.0
    Focal Length 72 mm
    ISO Speed 3200
    Exposure Bias+1/3 EV
    FlashNo Flash

The D700 does great at high ISO as you can see from this one at 3200. I have been pleased with results as high as ISO 8000. The key thing to remember, especially on your D80 is that correct exposure is critical as ISO goes up to minimize noise. You are much better off to push the ISO one notch higher to get a good exposure than to keep it lower and under expose.

Many thanks for the reply, I really like the lens so far.. i should say it will stay on the camera most of the time. I bought it specifically for it's range and the fact it was designed for a FX body (which i will be going to a D700 soon). Other than it's weight, i think it's well worth the money. I have my auto iso turned off, and i usually shoot with this lens around 400 (unless direct sunlight), i'll shoot more manual instead of aperture mode to take your advice and see how my shots come out. thanks much for the input.. much appreciated.

I don't think I said to shoot in manual, I almost never do. Keep auto ISO off, that is a bad "feature". Just make sure when you are shooting at higher ISO levels that don't shoot at f/7.1 when it wants you to shoot at f/5.6 :) Check your histogram, and reshoot if need be. Also either get some dedicated noise reduction software, or if you use Lightroom 3 the noise reduction in it is very good.
