Networking a pc and a mac

I was thinking about networking my mac and pc just to try to speed up moving photos back and forth.
A few questions:
Can the pc and mac be networked? I would think so because pc and mac both read jpgs and similar files.
How hard is this to do? Do I need any special equipment?
Is it worth it to do, my wife thought that they would be networked through our router and moving files would take long times like it would sending files via email.

Any advise?

It's actually really simple, no special equipment needed (other than a switch or hub, like any networking). Give this page a read through, and if you have any questions, just ask!
