cross threaded polariser

I picked up a 72mm polariser for my 135mm the other day on Ebay & it appears to be cross threaded. Well no...it IS cross threaded.
Saved myself $20 & got some trouble...good one gus.
This filter will sometimes screw straight on no worries & sometimes stop after a few threads as you would expect a filter to do with dodgy thread.
The question is..will i do any harm to the lens by occasionally having to try it a few times to get it to screw on properly ? I am being VERY gentle with it & only use 2 fingers. I am assuming that the lens thread is going to be of harder & higher quality than that of a Hoya filter.

2. brew a nice batch
3. get a fine cigar
4. light up, enjoy the cigar and kava
5. get the fire all nice and full of deep orange coals
6. toss filter in
7. watch filter melt back to the earth, from whence it came, contemplate your mistake
8. buy from a photo store, a real c-pl.

Kind of dodgy, but the fact that something doesn't work is a classic reason to divest the item in question for some folks 'gus.
You convinced me re: 135 F2 L. Sweet gem of a lens!

It focuses real close also - I'll bet a 72mm thread on 500D macro adapter will work real nicely with it too. You don't want to damage the threads on that lens with that 2nd rate polarizer you got stuck with

Lesson learnt...whilst Theivebay can be good.. it is also a dumping ground.
