A few weeks ago (maybe longer - just can't remember) somebody posted about a new and extremely inexpensive 3rd-party Canon flash. I believe it had some kind of slave capability, although not sure if that was IR or optical; I suspect it's a yongnuo but no matter how I try spelling it, nothing comes up in here for me. I've searched in here and googled till I'm blue and I can't find it! There are a few yongnuo flashes on Amazon, but not sure they're the one I read about in here since they don't mention being slave-able.

Anybody know which one I'm talking about? I could really use a 3rd flash, and Cheap Would Be Good :D

Thanks!

It might have been this post:

I do use and recommend the Sigma DG Super flashes and they have proven durable, reliable and compatible enough for any sort of my work, except when I need the rapid recycling capability of a Canon 580EX and external high-voltage battery pack (but they ain't cheap.)

Yep, the Sigma EF DG Super flashes do a faithful Canon E-TTL II emulation. thumb.gif

They also do manual mode and built-in optical slave (but not a digital optical slave) and Canon wireless and strobe mode and HSS/FP mode and ..., well just about everything that a top end Canon flash will do, except they will not take an external power supply for rapid recyling.

    Found it!! http://www.lightingrumours.com/yongnuo-yn-565ex-released-1370#com-head

I knew I'd seen a press release. Not quite as cheap as I remembered, but interesting.....

ETA: For those interested, here's a review http://speedlights.net/2011/08/28/yongnuo-yn-565-ex-flash-review/

I may actually just get one of the all-manual, $60 46xs (w/optical slave) to use as a 3rd flash for fill - which also lets me continue to use the STE2 as a trigger (the 7d's commander is great, but if you're doing a long session it can start to "lock up", sot he STE2 is sometimes a better bet). At some point, I need to go manual and get some radio triggers anyway, and a 2nd manual flash would be useful (430ex and a YN, since my 420ex is automatic only).

    Just thinking out loud.

Thanks Art. It does look like the Sigma flash battery case cover would have to be modified to use the Quantum MVI adapter/cable, but nothing much different from the old Vivitar flash mods of the 1970s. (Brings a nostalgic tear to my eyes. :D)
