Cross-town rivals Kalamazoo Loy Norrix vs. Kalamazoo Central squared off for their annual smash-up. The Norrix Knights have lost to Central's Maroon Giants 7 years in a row.:cry

I prefer shots showing faces so I like your first two but not the others. The last shot seems out of focus too. Lighting and cropping seems good.

I think only in very unusual situations would I post a shot without the subject's face.

I agree with Jay. Faces are very important to a compelling sports shot. On rare occasion the action makes up for the lack of faces. But that's not the case here. It's probably one of the most frustrating aspects of shooting sports - you get the timing down and there's good action, but the shot just doesn't succeed because of the lack of faces. You've got some good timing in some of these shots - but the angles just don't work. Next time out, try to be a little more selective on your keepers. And, even better, if you can't see the faces in the viewfinder, hold off on the shot.

It depends on what you are shooting for. If you are shooting to sell pictures to the moms, then I agree with attorneyjay. Moms will rarely buy my pictures if their kids face isn't turned at least partially toward the camera. If you are shooting for editorial purposes, then faces aren't as important but in that case you need to capture something special happening during the game. I'm jealous of the lighting conditions of your photos. Here in Arizona we have to play our football games after the sun goes down so its only 100 degrees rather than 110. With the poor lights in the HS stadiums, I have a hard time getting well-exposed shots that aren't noisy.

Great lighting, the giant softbox in the sky was just about perfect for the 1st 2 shots. Just remember... face, ball, action. Keep shootin!
