Domain name not working

I am not entirely sure this issue is related to smugmug, but I hope someone here will be able to shed some light on this matter.

I have been a happy user of smugmug and namecheap, where I have my own domain name http://kieboom.net.

Since about two weeks, I have been able to reach kieboom.net only occasionally. I have done online DNS checks an no errors are reported, so maybe there's a problem on smugmug's side and I thought I would ask for suggestions in this forum. The smugmug link http://kieboom.smugmug.com/ is always working.

I am lost as to how to determine where the problem lies and who to contact. Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

Thank you

Try it now? You just needed www before your domain name in the SmugMug control panel (I put that in for you).

Thanks a bunch Andy! It is indeed working with the www.

It has been working without the www since the beginning though, and to be honest, I would prefer it not to show the www.

I guess this is something I need to check/correct with my domain provider namecheap?

You need an A-record with namecheap, set to our IP address: 208.79.45.23

The reason why I did not have www in front of my custom hostname, was that I wanted the www to be removed automatically by setting both @ and www as CNAMEs referring to domains.smugmug.com (i.e. no A-record).
With the smugmug custom hostname set to having no www, any www entered is then removed automatically. This used to work, but it doesn't any more.

With the settings according to 1. Point your CNAME 'www' to domains.smugmug.com / 2. Point your A Record '@' to 208.79.45.23 , I can no longer have a www-less custom hostname in smugmug.

    Is there any recommended method?

This sounds like a limitation of your domain name host, you can see it works on zillions of SmugMug sites. Try mine, http://moonriverphotography.com

We support CNAME and we allow A-records. You can have both. Please follow our instructions to the letter thumb.gif

    Thanks again Andy!

Just as a final check (to see if the problem probably lies with my provider):
Have you set both '@' and 'www' as CNAMEs referring to domains.smugmug.com, i.e. no A-record?

No, I followed our instructions exactly :D I set www as cname to domains.smugmug.com and @ A-record to our IP address.

Yes, I did that too :D but then wth the settings according to 1. Point your CNAME 'www' to domains.smugmug.com / 2. Point your A Record '@' to 208.79.45.23, I was no longer able have a www-less custom hostname in smugmug. In other words, smugmug wouldn't accept a custom hostname without www.

Anyway, it would seem that the problem lies with my domain name provider.

Thanks for answering so patiently :)

We don't support www less domains either. You need to either use the www or another subdomain like galleries.yourdomain.com . Just yourdomain.com isn't supported.

    Funny, Andy's reply:

    Try mine, http://moonriverphotography.com

    Please explain. Thank you.

Sure - I already did :D we support CNAME to domains.smugmug.com and A-records to our IP address. http://moonriverphotography.com is an A-record on my domain host, godaddy.com thumb.gif

But an A-record needs to have an ip address, not a URL.

The ip address for the A-record is shown on the help page at http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/93340. And it does work. My site has the A-record defined, and it can be accessed without the www, as can Andy's site as noted above.

Exactly - just like we say in our help page on this topic.

There is some bad communication going on here. I'll take the blame. mwink.gif

I do appreciate all of the feedback, and I will renew my subscription.thumb.gif

But, I still have my problem. I do not want www.kieboom.net, I want just kieboom.net.

Until a couple of weeks ago, if one would enter www.kieboom.net, the www would automatically be removed. Smugmug doesn't allow me to have just kieboom.net as a custom domain name (unless I use domains.smugmug.com as a CNAME for both @ and www, but then the pages load without showing the pictures). Now, it's working in exactly the opposite way of what I want; kieboom.net changes into www.kieboom.net.

I do not like www in world wide web URLs, it's useless and so nineties.

Can you try this: http://kieboom.net ?

Yes, it shows www.kieboom.net, so it adds www, which makes me unhappy.

Pretty sure that's the browser doing that.
