What Smugmug sharpening settings do you use?

When I upload my photos to smugmug, I notice a slight decrease in image sharpness.
Smugmug allows us to change the sharpening settings for uploads. But how do I know what values to use for Amount and Radius? Do I just experiment until I find the value I like best, or are there guidelines I should follow?

BTW, I recently switched over to smugmug from another photo hosting site, and I'm glad I did.
When I uploaded my Canon 7D photos to my previous site, the images were soft. But smugmug does a much better job, and provides a sharpening tool. Three cheers for Smugmug!

Just experiment :) Our default sharpening works for nearly everyone. If you want, increase the amount and radius on some sample photos by 10% each and see when you like it.

I've left mine on default. And even though my cameras are soft by modern standards, the shots still look great. thumb.gif

I'm just learning about pp, but perhaps I need to resize for the web before I upload to smugmug?

Is that how others do it? Or do you let smugmug's sw resize the photo for you?
    I'm using an 18mp camera.

I use an amount of 0.3 (and keep the other adjustments at the default settings) for wildlife and landscape images. For images of people, I use the default settings.

We recommend uploading your photos at original size for best printing results should you ever want to order prints for your photos.

If you still want to resize, keep our minimum resolution requirements for the different print sizes in mind:
    http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/93359#minprintres
Below those minimums, a print size wouldn't be available and you would have to replace the photo with its original if you wanted to order a larger print size in the future.

My default gallery comes up as Threshhold = 1 and Sigma = 0.05, but the defaults that printed in the settings page says the defaults should be the other way around. Is this an oops at SmugMug in the documentation, or the default settings?

    Andrew,
Do you refer to a quick setting? It may use different settings. Try creating a gallery with no quick setting selected and you'll see that the defaults are as shown on the gallery settings on the right of the sharpening fields:
    Amount: 0.200 (20%)
    Radius: 1.000
    Threshold: 0.0500
    Sigma: 1.000

Nope, no quick settings or anything like that. The gallery was created via the SmugMug uploader in LightRoom but no sharpening or presets were specified. I'm noticing that my Default is messed up, but not sure where that is specified (yet). I'll have to poke around. If I create with SmugMug Default, things are as-expected.

If I'm not using a quick-setting, where are the defaults coming from since they are apparently criss-crossed...

Andrew, if you create your gallery via Lightroom, make sure to check the quick settings menu > advanced settings screen > sharpening tab in the gallery creation dialog. You may have entered other sharpening settings there.

What version of the Lightroom plugin do you use? You may update it manually to the latest version:

For my nature and wildlife images, I use the default values except I set an amount of 0.3.. For my images of weddings/people, I use the default settings as is.
