Got an iPad? Want to shoot tethered to it anywhere?

So freaking cool. I've been shooting tethered to my Laptop for a bit now. It's kind of a PIA even with the 16 foot USB cord I have but the benefits of getting an instant preview on a large screen is huge, both for me and also the model. One other issue specific to Nikon is that when tethered through a cord, photos only get stored on the computer, not the flash card. This is an issue for me because the puter I tether to is not where I ultimately store and edit my pics.

I thought for a while, "Wouldn't it be so cool if I could shoot tethered to my iPad ? Well, found this today. Going to pick up the card and see how it works. Very stoked right now. It's wireless. Depending on the card you get, you can even shoot wirelessly outside through an adhock network between your cam and iPad. Also solves the issue of writing to your flash card on Nikon, which is nice because you also get instant backup onto your iPad in case something goes wrong.

Check out the first video.

cool that's what I do on my Windows 7 Laptop.
I have them imported to a specific folder and I have LR set to watch that folder and automatically import the shots.

using the i pad would be so much nicer.thumb.gif

You have to jailbreak your Ipad and then buy numerous software programs for it to work ad hoc. Then you have to plug up to a computer anyway to get the images off the Ipad unless you email the huge files instead or buy an Ipad camera kit to transfer back on a memory card. Seems like a lot to do just to have a larger preview screen than what's on the camera itself. ne_nau.gif This tech has been around awhile and it's not all that popular.

Sorry if this is old tech... it's new to me so I assumed it maybe useful to others that shoot tethered.

UH.. and doesn't seem that complicated or expensive from what I have researched. Yes. You do have to jailbreak your iPad but who hasn't anyway. And that's only if you want to shoot tethered without the need of an WiFi connection. If you have a WiFi network available, then no need to jailbreak. As for software... it requires a free app to shoot within the constraint of a WiFi network. An extra $20 or so for another app to be able to use your iPad as an adhock network. Again, not need if you're using within WiFi. As far as hardware is concerned, two different SD WiFi cards depending on what you want to do. $40 for a 4GB card to shoot with WiFi; $80 for an 8GB card needed for adhock.

So for me, I'm looking at a total of about $50 since I won't use this outside a network. Not bad if you ask me. Well worth the ability to give instant feedback to your model or yourself during studio work.

The video was posted on here about a year ago. No doubt some will find it useful though. It just hasn't caught on yet because it's a pain to the average person... and costs a substantial amount. I personally wouldn't bother unless I was doing ad hoc anyway... because that's the best part imo. If I was going to limit myself to my own network.... I'd do it the old fashion way and just Eye Fi images to review on the studio pc/mac/netbook... for free. Having to buy Shuttersnitch, a wifi program, and the card to do adhoc adds up quick and most people do NOT jailbreak their Ipads. As soon as there is a better way, the whole thing will catch on much more quickly.

Ummmm, guys, it is cool technology, but Eye-fi makes an iPad app (free), takes about 2 minutes to set up. Supports ad-hoc tethering for shooting anywhere. No jail breaking or any other foolishness. Just type eye-fi into iTunes app store or the "apps" application on your iPad. You can even configure it to directly upload photos to flicker and i believe here at smugmug as well. Haven't tried that bit yet as I edit before uploading. You just need to buy the eye-fi pro X2 card. (about $90 on amazon). Personally, I like setting the camera to store RAW on the CF card and small j-pegs on the SD card. With that setup you get near instant feedback on your iPad. Takes about 3-4 seconds. That way you have three copies of each photo for redundant storage and when you get ready to edit you just pop the CF card into the computer you edit on like you always did.

    Hope that helps. :D
