Had an interesting chain of events yesterday. I was doing some dewdrop refraction shots on the lawn when a damp hoverfly crawled onto the piece of plastic pipe I was using as a lens rest. So I picked up the pipe and put it on a sunchair for easier shooting and then noticed this going on on the same sunchair about 2" away. Two dance flies having a wrestling match. The dance fly on top in the last shot won and then spent the next hour sucking the loser dry.

I gather this is a male and female of the same species with the female winning so it may be a post - mating row. The male must have forgot to bring the female something to eat beforehand (often happens with these flies).
