Earlier this year I was in the favela (neighborhood) of Alemao in Rio. This neighborhood was notorious for drug and organized crime 6 months earlier. What has been described as an "invasion" by the military police cleaned it up in about a month's time. Some of my colleagues and I were curious about the present state of Alemao, so in we went. Here are a few of the images I took last spring.

The sentinel, it seemed like this guy knew who came & went

Kid, maybe a little more cautious and wary than you might expect

The streets seem vacant, but safe to walk

Nice set, Jim. I think color was a good choice, as the flavor would be diluted in B&W, especially in the first two.

I like the set and really appreciate viewing sets from foreign places. The soldiers patrolling the streets is my favorite as it is always jolting to realize this is normal in many places.
