I got robbed. I was at a garage sale this week and picked up a copy of Photoshop CS5 Extended edition. Thought I was getting a deal, but I guess the guy didn't deactivate it from his machine. I only paid $10.00 but now it's telling me I don't have a valid serial.

I'm looking at purchasing what I know would be a legit copy of something but I don't know what I need. I have PaintShop Pro, but it's been messing up my pictures lately. What's the best Photoshop alternative program? Should I get Elements 9 or Lightroom 3?

Lightroom 3 offers the most bang for the buck I think. First rate Digital Asset Manager, and a first rate RAW engine, the same one that is in CS5, although the sliders have different numbers associated with them.

If you need layers for your image processing, some folks just use Photoshop Elements, but I do prefer CS5 myself.

I don't think the Raw engine in Elements is as sophisticated as in LR3 and CS5.

Go back to the guy you bought CS5 from and have him deactivate it, if he has not already erased it from his hard drive... Otherwise, get your $10 bucks back.

I will be doing that in the next couple days. I did buy a hard copy of the software so I should have a legit copy. I have the actual disc and the actual registration number it wasn't a burned CD or anything. I will be talking with him soon.

The owner can transfer the license to your name. They need to contact Adobe. There may be a small fee (pay it!) to do this well worth it!

If they complain or say they can't or don't want the hassle they are most likely not the legitimate owners.

If you can get them to trasfer the license you are then able to upgrade, and get updates.

Oh, what’s the old saying about something being too good to be true. Robbed? For $10, seems like a reasonable fee to pay to learn a valuable lesson about buying software.

OK, so now buy a legitimate version of Lightroom and maybe Elements.

Counterfeits on eBay sell for more than that ...

Thanks everyone. I downloaded a free trial of Lightroom 3 and am getting used to it now. Is there a blemish remover tool or healing tool like in photoshop?

Yes, there is a clone/heal tool. Not as good as in photoshop. It's the same tool you use for burning, dodging, etc., on the right hand panel.

Lightroom 3
I'm looking at Lightroom 3 and that seems to load a lot faster than Photoshop did. However I can't seem to get to the editing function of the program. I open the program into Lightroom 3 Catalog. All I can see is my one image I've imported then, a few adjustments on the right. Nothing else. Is this all there is to the program or an I missing something?

Lightroom is a modular program-- on the upper right there should be a few different modules (Library, develop, print ...). The one you want is Develop. You can use the "d" key as a shortcut.

Click on your image to select it, then either hit D on the keyboard or click on Develop to enter the development module. The adjustment panels will be on the right.
