does anyone have a 18-55 ef-s usm kitty lens that they wish to part with?
reason: need it for when my wife used the camera for family stuff...
you could just get her a P&S.
I can see the discussion now.
Hunny you can use this camera body but only I can change the lenses on it. Oh and you can use this lense. DO NOT TOUCH MY OTHER LENSES. Or no more little blue boxes for you.:ymca

i gave her the 20d with a 24-105L on it, she said "ew, too heavy"

One of the companies (I think it's canon even) has a real gold point and shoot camera. You could put it in a blue box and it would compliment her outfit.
Andy, you want to trade the 24-105 for the Kit lens? I have been thinking of selling mine, but I am not sure what it is worth, or what to replace it with.

i want to buy an 18-55 ef-s usm (the newer model) kit lens. not interested in any trading but thanks for asking the value is about $50-$60, give or take.
That is the lens I have. It came with my 20D a month ago. It works fine, but like you said it is light and I am not fond of the zooming f-stop. Any suggestions for what a reasonable replacement for it would be?

Interesting, I got my 20D kit in August and 18-55 was not USM... Does it mean there is a newer model than what got (and later sold:-)?

Andy, this is the kit lens for the 20D? The one that came with my camera is identical, but it does not have USM. It says EFS on the top as well. Where the one in the picture shows USM, mine says II.
What is the difference between these two? You are looking for the USM one, right?
there are 3 versions of the 18-55
(that i know of, anyway)
the first is the original 18-55 (MKI). this lens was available only as part of the kit with the original 300D digital rebel.
the second is the 18-55 USM. this lens is available as a stand-alone lens from retailers such as B&H. this was packaged as a kit ONLY in europe with the original 300D, in black rebel body kits only.
the third is the 18-55 MKII. this lens is available only as part of the 20D and 350D kits. this is NOT a usm lens, and is (supposedly) only cosmetically different from the MKI.
each of these lenses is labeled accordingly on the front element baffle:

It looks like this, says "USM" on the lens front.
