I have an sb600 that met its demise when it slipped off my camera and hot the floor, it worked for a few shots after that, then it got real hot and became useless. I have heard of people sending them off to get fixed. what is the process? How can i know what to expect to pay?

If you would rather use an independent service, Nikon has a list of authorized service and repair shops:

The Nikon Service will give you an estimate before repair. With an independent service organization you should make your wishes known in writing (e-mail is OK) and get a written acknowledgment first. (Different places have different policies. Good early communication should avoid most surprises.)

and on their website they have a place to start a dialogue and ask for an estimate and they answer promptly...
their work has always been top notch and fast.....extremely trust worthy in my opinion.
