Guys i was reading that i need to get to a maint page on my URL to do a re-direct as i wish to remove the word SmugMug from my page. I have sat in front of it for ages & there just does not appear to be an area that i can log into to do this.

Do all URL's have this ?

no, you do it yourself with namescout. you must have a login with them, then look thru their help files or contact them, to find out how you can do the following:

you've got to edit your "domain alias" aka cname, so that www.wajdelaphotography.com.au "points" to wajdelaphotography.smugmug.com

then, you go to your control panel and enter "custom hostname" and enter www.wajdelaphotography.com.au in that field.

once both of these are done, it can take 12-24 hours for the bits to get from oz to silicon valley and back - ok?

You'll most likely THINK we all drowned but will have missed the fact that we all escaped safely out the clearly labeled escape hatch, while you struggle and fight against the current...

Andy,
I remember that you had to set your cname directly to www.smugmug.com and the help also says so! Did that change recently? ne_nau.gif

hey sebastian,

i've got
http://www.moonriverphotography.com
http://moonriverphotography.com

both going directly to my smug account (williams.smugmug.com). you have to edit the cname (on register.com) to point to the smugmug url, then add the custom hostname on your control panel (www.moonriverphotography.com) smugmug does the rest automatically :D

i guess either my williams.smugmug.com or just www.smugmug.com would work - smugmug probably has a wildcard thing set up, eh?

Ok, than everything is alright. :)
I guess the thing in the help is just how they planed to have it, but people never looked into that and used their own addresses. That resulting in smugmug setting up the wildcard to cover this problem.

Hmmm... URL forwarding is generally not what you want. Here's how namescout describes their forwarding:

Unfortunately, we do not offer a "cloaked" or "phantom" URL forwarding service. With our URL forwarding service, the address displayed in the address bar will change to the forwarded address once the forward takes place. If you require the address to remain the same you will need to find a hosting provider that offers cloaked forwarding and have them host the URL forward for you.

That kind of forwarding is nasty because you type in www.humungus.com (or whatever), you watch the URL change to gus.smugmug.com (or whatever). Then you hit the back button, it goes back to humungus.com and then re-forwards you so you're stuck in a loop.

Maybe this help section is for you?

My domain registrar doesn't let me change the cname either - however zonedit.com will do it for you. You don't need to move the domain, just change the nameservers. There is no charge for this...

Just 2 questions baldy.
Baldy...im looking at your suggestion. Im having heaps of trouble with getting namescout to reply to me as i cannot log into my Master Account...i'll sort that out...but

Whats the go...say i go with one of the ones SM recommends after i do the stuff to enable it in my account....do i just send an email to the new mob explaining that i want to jump ship ?

Do they usually ask you to pay again ?

A transfer from Namescout.com to another registrar is initiated from the receiving registrar. Before you can transfer your domain away, you must first login to your Master Account at namescout and ensure that the High Security feature is deactivated on your domain. Once you have logged into your Master Account , click on the "Domain Admin" tab. When the page refreshes, you will see a listing of the domains in your account. High Security can be deactivated by clicking on the lock icon next to your domain. If the icon appears as an open lock the service is disabled. Once the High Security service has been removed you must initiate your registrar transfer from your new registrar.
