Domain name and google searching

I have been thinking about getting a custom domain name thru GoDaddy and was wondering how that would affect google searches for people who have previously searched by my current smugmug url? Right now I typically come up with 3-4 hits on the first page with my current address. I have quite a few links in forums and was wondering how a name change might affect them as well.

    Hi Blooze,

    Your 'unique' address on the net, eg: yourname.smugmug.com - through SmugMug, ALWAYS works -

    So adding a custom domain would not affect the current links or site standing - the cname 'may' actually improve it.

    Note - if you edit/change your account nickname, that would break the links -
