Random image size not working properly?

Anyone else having this issue?

I use the random image URL on my main page to link to my recently galleries as I have been doing so for the past few years as directed by the following customization technique:

However, today I have noticed that when a random horizontal image is pulled from my album, it doesn't display in the size which I specify in the URL which is Size=400x400.

The vertical images that display are done so at the correct 400 pixel size but the horizontal images don't. This is bad as the horizontal images cover up the navigation which is on the right side of the page.

Note: I have also noticed it's happening randomly on different linked horizontal images.

So, this really isn't a bug...

What is going on here is that we are taking the custom image size you are adding in here and keeping the aspect ratio of the original image while the one size is being changed to your custom sizing.

For example, you were to change an image that is 4000 x 6000 to the 400 x 400 as you indicated, you would come up with a 400 x 600 image in order to keep the originals looking good.

It has been working fine for years and now today I notice it's not doing the same thing it was doing before.

How is that not a bug? Nothing has changed on my end.

If you view http://ClubFlys.com you can see how some of the horizontal images are well over 400 pixels wide and others are still being confined to the 400 pixels limit i set in the values for the SIZE attribute of the random image URL.

Also, as we can see here... same code, same SIZE limits to 400x400 for each of the images shown for the three posts in this screen shot, and yet two of them aren't confined to 400x400 pixels. Why does it only work properly for some horizontal images and not others?

I thought that the image would be smaller than the specified custom size, not longer???

From the help page at http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/93264-custom-sizes:

Tip: You can avoid doing math and just put in something like 1000x1000. The longest dimension will be made 1000 pixels in size and the other will be scaled according to the aspect ratio of the image.

We are looking into this at the moment. I can see the issue and replicate with your images. Stay tuned for further findings

Also replicated with bunch of other images. I reported this as bug and we are waiting for a fix.

I've managed a work around by setting the size to SIZE=399x399 vice SIZE=400x400. Seem to work normally with anything 399 and below. I haven't tried anything larger than 400.

Indeed the problem is only with 400x400. This has been fixed in our codebase and we are waiting for some infrastructure changes before we can push it out.
