I'm just starting out with SM and I want a great start. Problem is that I don't get the organization. I wanted to have a portfolio then couples then wedding and engagement both under that. When I tried to add the couples with wedding and engagement as a sub-category, it listed the sub-cats differently than the rest of the portfolio. It put them up top with the listing of Portfolio sub-category. So now I've changed it back so it's all on one page but I just don't get this. Those of you that use sub-categories, would you please reply and let me check out your sites? And anyone that can shed some light on the best way to organize around here please share your tips. Thanks

I wanted to add- I looked at http://photos.codyjbennett.com/ and am not sure why weddings comes with the list of sub-category and portraits is portraits gallery. That was just the one site that I researched tonight.

In the site you linked, all of the galleries in the Weddings category are in subcategories, and none of the galleries in the Portraits category are in subcategories. So one goes from category to subcategory to gallery and the other goes from category to gallery.

If you mix standalone galleries and galleries within a subcategory in the same category then you will have the separation you are describing. The only way around that it to build an html-only gallery to use in place of the category (from a showing to customers point of view only, it will not change the structure). If you want to try something like that, see the tutorial at http://allen-steve.smugmug.com/gallery/3539056.

If you want specific help with your site we will need a link to your site. Please add it to your dgrin signature so it is always available to the helpers here. Click the clipboard on the navbar above, then Edit Signature.

There is also a JavaScript to display subcategories and galleries within a single category together, which I am using on my site (http://brendancoxphotography.com/Galleries/). See #6 here: http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=135068. The only limitation is that sub-categories will be displayed before galleries. Apart from that you can freely arrange sub-categories and galleries in the order you prefer.

    Cheers,

Denise- Thank you. Either your explanation or sleep finally helped me to understand.
Brendan- Great to know- I think that was more of what I was looking to do.
