Found this link from DPreview, shows how Kubrick used a Zeiss 50mm f/0.7 lens for his very low light filming.

As stated in the article Kubrick was also a still photographer, and applied his same omnipotent bystander approach to his work for Look Magazine.

Kubrick was a genius, and it is no suprise that he pushed the limits of cinematographic science, as he pushed the limits of emotions that could be conveyed through film.
