How to achieve what I need

Hello all!

I'd like to use SmugMug to host three different kinds of galleries:

1) Public galleries. The name has it all. Pictures I post to be famous :-)

2) My private galleries. Family stuff. Parties and friends. Stuff I want to share with my closest people. Protected with a password, same password for everything; password changes every once in a while.

3) Sharing of individual galleries. Something for a client, or the like. Password-protected, each gallery has an individual password.

Now, to that end, I created three categories ("Public", "Private", "Shared") and some quick gallery settings which store what I need.

Now I'm facing two challenges:

First, I do not see a way to change settings for all galleries in a category. E.g., if I want to make all public galleries unlisted, or listed. Or, if I want to change the overall password for all galleries in the Private category.

Second, I would like to post galleries directly from within Lightroom. While this is very convenient and also offers access to all kinds of configuration, ideally I would like simply to select what kind of gallery I'm uploading (Private, Public, or Shared) and in the case of a "Shared" gallery which individual password I want to use; all the other settings should be derived automatically from the fact that I am uploading into that particular category.

Any advice, anyone, about how to achieve this?

One solution would be to have three SmugMug accounts. But I was hoping for a cheaper way :dunno

Al

    Al,

    For your challenges.

    1. You cannot change those settings at the gallery level currently. Sorry. If you make all of the galleries in a category unlisted or put the same password on all of them, the category will act like it is unlisted or passworded. ie. enter the password for one gallery and visitors can access all of the galleries with that same password without entering it again.

    2. You do have access to the quick settings from inside Lightroom. The option is there when you create galleries. Setup the quick settings with the options you want applied and that will speed up the process.

    Thank you Doc.

@1: How do people deal with this sort of thing? I mean, I will occassionally want to change e.g. the theme on a group of galleries (say, all the "romantic" galleries or all of the business-related). Selecting galleries one-by-one cannot be the feasible way to go, can it? If I change a quick setting, do all galleries which share this quick setting change with it?

@2: Yes that is true - but e.g. theme is not affected by the quick settings, unfortunately.

    Thank you for your help!

Actually - I have a question that is similar... I have many galleries and all are setup as "islands". I want them all to be only available to those I send links to. When a family member gets a link to a new gallery, they can see all my other galleries.. but there are times when I only want people to see the gallery I sent the link to... nothing else.

I guess this would be setup the same as you would for client galleries... only that client should see that gallery and they should not be able to see your other galleries which are for other clients... so, what settings (both global and local) would I need to set to do this? Can you mix/match this so that some galleries are public to certain viewers while other viewers only see a specific gallery? BTW: none of these users would be smugmug customers.

    Thx!

You can't change the theme with a quick setting. But you can apply a theme to multiple galleries if you use the multiple gallery option in your gallery settings. So you can choose all the galleries you want to adjust the theme in then apply it to them all in one go.

Our system can't distinguish one visitor from another. But if you are wanting to make a gallery so your visitors can't view the rest of your site then you can set the Hide Owner option in your gallery settings to Yes. That will remove any of the links back to the rest of your site, so the gallery will appear to be a stand alone gallery

Ok, no problem. That's what I'd like to do: Upload everything from Lightroom, then go to the website, select my category and apply a theme/setting to all galleries within this category -- thus "catching" all the newly added galleries as well. Only that this is not possible - I need to select the new galleries one by one. With some likelihood of overseeing a few - especially once we are talking about a few dozen galleries...

Is there already a feature request to change settings for groups of galleries (e.g., categories) in one go? I'd vote all my votes on it right away :-))

    Thanks

The only problem I've run across with this is that the tool UI breaks down once you've got a couple of hundred galleries. If you've got over a thousand like me, any tools that talk about multiple galleries just aren't up to the task. :cry
