I am looking into getting a MacBook pro. The new prices are chocking me. :D Hence my looking for a newer used one. I am however completely baffled at the shear number of FS offers that say something like: It's only 8 days old sealed in the box. I bought this last week but it's to large I wast to get a smaller one. I bought this yesterday but my company just bought me a new one so i don't need this one. Times are hard and I need the money it's only two weeks old.

You get the idea. One or two, but there are a ton of these....................where the heck do they get these? What could be the scam? There seems to be way to many for all of them to be hot, but the stories don't make any sence.

Maybe they are fake? Or hot? Makes no sense, as you said.

    Where?

I am finding these on my local craigslist. San Francisco Bay Area. Like I say if it were one now and again, but it's a constant theme. Seems like to many to be hot.

    Tom,

Thanks, I am smart enough to not fall for the typical scam. The one I am talking about are local. My plan if I find one that looks good and passes the smell test, would be to meet in the local Mac store, have them check it out. Then proceed to my bank where I will hand them a check. If that's too much trouble for them i will pass.

It's just the ones that claim to be sealed and only days old and must sell that get me. Normal people would just take it back for a refund.

Maybe they're Apple Employees buying them on the friends and family purchase plan. Apple obviously would not approve of them selling them for pure profit, so the employee might be trying to keep it low key. That's just a guess though. I'd certainly want a credible story from the seller before I bought it and an original receipt. You don't want to be buying stolen merchandise.

    Best of luck
I think you'll find that the majority of these posters are scammers up to no good. Your idea of meeting in the store then going to the bank will weed out most of them. I'd also recommend a daytime transaction. You can google what happened on more than one occasion in San Diego when the buyer thought they knew how to handle themselves and tried to make that transaction. I recently purchased a vehicle and had a similar experience. Honestly i think there are a lot of unemployed folks out there trying to make their living the old fashioned way. Best of luck and please let us know how it went.

I would spend the extra and just buy it new from the Apple store and a warranty, great added value, peace of mind and excellent support and no hassle, probably save yourself a lot of time that has to be worth something .

You only live once and their are approximately 8760 hours in a year based on 24 hrs x 365 days,so if you live until age 65 you will have lived a little over 570 thousand hours, so however you spend your time I hope your having fun. Money can't by time.

This reminds me of an incident that happened not too long ago in San Diego. When the buyers met the "sellers", the "sellers" robbed the buyers at gun point and stole their car. Cant' be too careful these days.

Update: I went ahead and bought a refurbished 15" Mac Book Pro. High res anti glare screen, 750 gig HD, upgraded graphics card, 8 gig RAM, i7 2.0 GHz Sandy Bridge processor.

The build is superb. Very thin and sleek. I would use the term futuristic as well. The high rez anti glare screen is crystal clear and sharp, simply fantastic. I normally don't like track pads, but this one is sweet. I bought a magic mouse and I may not even use it.

It's pretty much set up now. LR, CS5, addresses, email, etc. Ready to rock and roll.
