After photo sessions, I send an unlisted gallery link to the client.
After the final selections, I would like to disable the link.
Is there a way to do this?
Or do I just need to use share groups for this functionality?
Because the unlisted links require the gallery key and id it's pretty hard to make them disabled. You do have some options though:
1) Password protect the gallery. This option will still have a valid link but, your customers won't be able to visit the galleries unless you also give them the password.
2) Move photos to a new gallery, delete original gallery. Simply moving the gallery to a new category will not work because the gallery key and id will refresh the link to the correct category/subcategory path as needed. Instead you can use the gallery tools to move the photos to a new gallery. Then, you can delete the original gallery there by making the current link invalid.
Change the Gallery name and the nice name and they can't/won't find it without having to password protect it..
That's not actually true. If the gallery number is in the URL (which it usually is), then the nice name and gallery name are irrelevant (because the gallery number is the real identifier that Smugmug uses to find the gallery). You can't change the gallery number for a gallery. You'd have to create a new gallery and move the images there as was suggested earlier in order to get a different gallery number.

I'd just use the password protection method suggested. That would be the simplest way to disable/enable viewing.

Here's a slightly different twist on this question then:
Let's say I sent some friends a link to one of my public photos or galleries. Then one day I decided to make the gallery or photo link that I sent them an unlisted gallery. Would they be able to click on that old link in their email or bookmarks and see that gallery or photo that is no longer public? And thereby, be able to see the whole gallery again?
What exactly do I have to change to prevent someone from viewing a once public gallery without resorting to password protecting it?

Unlisting a gallery only hides the gallery from your public display. It doesn't change access to any existing URL. So, anyone who knows the URL can get it, even when its unlisted. That's by design. It's like an unlisted phone number. It's not in the phone book so it can't be easily discovered by someone who doesn't know it, but anyone who has it already or whom you tell it to can use it.
You can block a link to a gallery by adding a password to the gallery or by removing the gallery.
Breaking a direct link to a photo in an unlisted gallery is actually hard to do. I know you can do it by doing make a copy and then deleting the original. I don't know if there's another way to do it.
So, if I'm working on uploading some galleries and have them unlisted and password protected with the same password as others... all someone has to do is enter the correct password I gave them (for the other galleries) and guess the unlisted prefix and presto! they get to view what I'm not ready to have viewed by anyone but me?

The unlisted prefix is purposely not very guessable. For an unlisted gallery, they would need both the gallery ID and gallery key which is a sequence like this 5608869_TKj4KW so guessing is really not a worry.

Yep. Every one of my galleries are unlisted. No one has been able to get to a gallery via my smugmug site.

With the unlisted gallery prefix being: www.myname.smugmug.com/category/sub-category/gallery ... that's all they need to view an unlisted gallery?
