I need to submit ONE photo from my recent Kelby photowalk in Brighton Beach and I am at a total loss how to pick as the photos are all so different. I've included a contact sheet below. I would appreciate any and all opinions as to which shot is "the best". Thanks for your input.

It looks as though there's some interesting stuff here, but getting too it is just too damn hard. Allow me to suggest that you edit them down to a half-dozen and then post those here at a decent size. This looks as though you haven't done any editing at all, and the only way to see these decent size is to go to Flikr, and there it means sorting through endless thumb nails.

I assure you I have done LOTS of edits. I took over 300 shots, and after rejects and just uninteresting shots got that down to about 75 or so that I put on Flickr. I then cut that by about 1/3rd in the ones I put on the contact sheet. My problem is that its not like I took 20 shots of one person and am trying to pick the best, the subjects are all so different. I am troubled as to picking one that is characteristic of the area or just picking a photo that I really like that may not be characteristic of the area. I have some of people, some of nature and some of objects. If you don't have time I understand that.

Whatshesaw - I eliminated the two guys in the doorway because the walk leader pointed that out to everyone and probably several hunderd shots were taken of them.

No theme perse. It was for one of the Kelby worldwide photowalks in Brighton Beach NY. That is part of my problem, I don't know if I should just pick the photo I think is "Best" (whatever that might mean) versus one that is somewhat characteristic of the area.

4503, the guy on the boardwalk reading the paper if you do some post with it. Kind of flat as is. And figure out the umbrella with cropping it out or if that's a crop displayed, leaving it whole?

Yet looking at them while not knowing the location personally, this image struck me as a good non-typical beach kind of image. All the others would have meaning if you were there or knew the place. If not, they could mostly all be taken inner-city anywhere.

If there is no theme I would pick the best one.

Pick the best one. And be much more critical in narrowing down the choices. I would quickly throw out all the beginning ones until the two kids blowing the balloons. Goodbye beach, seagulls, transit, and glass cars. Goodbye walking guy, standing guy, and two standing kids. Now post what is left in larger sizes for opinions (and your choices may vary from mine, but choose from a few, not a few dozen...

Thanks. Have decided based on comments from many people in several places to go with the kids blowing the balloons.

Based on what group you show if it were me I would submit 4600 the man in the yellow jacket after converting to B/W. As BD stated there is interesting stuff here.

I like #7 the man in red on the beach, but I'd like to see it in a larger size

"Best" in what sense? What do you mean by "best?" If you're talking about street photography, none of them can qualify as "best." If you're talking about snapshots for a personal album, or shots you want to show visitors to "entertain" them, then maybe one or two can qualify. First you need to define "best."

So what makes something street photography versus some other type of photography? If it is taken on a street is it not street photography?

Take a look at the collection of links in the sticky at the top of the forum. Here's a good place to start: What is Street Photography? deal.gif

I think this has some potential (street or not, I'm not going to get into that discussion). I think if you cropped a good chunk from the bottom so that the line of post begins almost at the lower right corner, you would get a better feel. I'm still undecided between color or BW.
