Getting the featured images from categories and albums

Is there an API to get the featured image for a category or an album? I would like to display that image, like the site does. Does this exist? I cannot find a way short of creating my own "featured" setting in my app.

You can get it for an album. The "Highlight" represents the featured image for an album and is returned by smugmug.albums.getInfo:
