Your mounting preferences - block mounting, floating prints or frames?

Just wondering, what sort of presentation do people prefer for photos? (I'm talking about large prints here, so albums, small frames, photo books, etc. are out).

Floating mounts, with the photo mounted on a thin substrate, which is then 'floated' 1-2cm in front of the wall (or in front of another backdrop), giving the illusion of the photo hanging in mid-air? Block-mounted prints, with the photo mounted on a thick piece of MDF or Gatorboard, edged to give a finishing touch, then hung flush against the wall? Or traditional frames (with or without glass)?

Yes to all of the above.

If you had to pick just one type?

The key here is I don't have to pick one. I would choose a mounting method based on the image, where the image will be displayed, budget considerations, image presentation intent, and archival considerations.

Many large prints look very nice printed on canvas, gallery wrapped, no additional frame required.

Think of the mounting / framing as part of the image presentation.......no one size fits all.

I am asking because I'm preparing an exhibition of landscape photography (with some wildlife/travel shots thrown in: http://www.imperialstudios.biz/Landscapes/Mountains/12098427_TXwnn#1492457369_5Tqq5HR. All the prints will be printed and mounted the same way - I'm already going with high-gloss MetalPrints with square corners (as offered through the Bay Photo website), as the Cibachrome-type output seems to work very well with my photos. The only question is how to mount them...

I'm not entirely sold on canvas - IMO you lose resolution (detail being paramount in landscape photos), dynamic range and colour saturation. I can see how it would work well with certain images, though.
