Moonrise over Manaslu - star trails in Nepal

45-minute night-time exposure of Manaslu, the 8th highest mountain in the world. The beginning of moonrise at the end of the exposure illuminates the mountain from the south-east.

Taken from ~5200m elevation, in -30 degree cold - I had to experiment on 3 consecutive nights to perfect the timing and exposure, using heat packs to keep the camera gear warm and frost-free during the shot.

Amazing image, or should I say images!! I will be happy to gain half the skill and talent you have. Thanks for sharing and explaining a little about the shot. Once I get over my depression, it will give me something to strive for. Just out of curiosity, all your images have amazing color. Is there a little HDR going on? I know it can be used to enhance and not just look fake. I guess I am just curious in how you get such rich color and dynamic range if not. Thanks again!

Brilliant timing of this shot to catch the illumination from the moonrise in this way. thumb.gif

It's mostly filters and blended exposures, rather than HDR software.
