The "Processing image" syndrom

Hi there,

I'm new to Smugmug, and was very happy about it since I started to play with it few weeks ago, but for now I've a strange issue that appeared yesterday while uploading new galleries : I got few pictures that were displayed with a "Processing image" thumbnail. Note it was not duplicates of well uploaded pictures as I could read in another thread.

Deleting / reloading did not help.

I tried to keyword those "processing image" pictures with some difficulties (it didn't work every times).

Few hours later all those pictures apparently disappeared by themselves from the galleries, but it's only "apparently" as from time to time I can still see those nasty thumbnails reappearing.

Meantime I've pictures missing from two galleries and I don't know how to recover this.

Any help?

Thanks a lot.

    Hello

We'd be happy to look into this problem, to see what might have happened :-)

Please head over to http://help.smugmug.com, and send a direct-link to the Gallery in question to the Heroes on the help desk. We'll see if there was anything abnormal about the upload, etc.

    All the best,
    Bobby

This isn't anything you did, it is just the way Smugmug works. Wait a day or so and the "processing image" will display normally. Nothing you can do but wait.

I'm happy to wait but after few hours the pictures disappear instead of being displayed normally.
I contacted the support as suggested above, I'll share the outcome here once the issue is clarified.

    Thanks.

I'm running into this too, and from what I recall I think this has happened in the past.

I'm searching for the workaround I used back then...

Okay, here's the thread where it happened last time, just a few months ago:
    http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=202597

And here's what I ended up using as a workaround:
"I'm just deleting anything under the mass delete tool that doesn't have a proper thumbnail and then reuploading with skip duplicates. And I repeat this process until I get everything up properly. It's a real bother."

This isn't going to be fun...:cry

Latest news about this problem: it seems only related to black & white images built with Photoshop using 'grayscale' color mode (graygamma2.2 color space).
The majority of images I've like this have been uploaded successfully until now, but for any reason 7 of them refuse systematically to be uploaded. Behavior is always the same, i.e. the image goes in "Processing Image" state, then disappears by itself some times after.
Smugmug support has now a copy of those pictures and are trying to upload them themselves in my galleries.
If at the same time they could understand why Smugmug cannot process them successfully automatically we should have the final explanation...
Meantime a workaround is to convert the pictures to use RGB color space, but the image quality is impacted :-(

Fwiw, I uploaded a football game gallery overnight. This morning I had 9 "PO"s. I didn't have time to mess with them, but when I got home from work, they were fixed.

    Btw, these were 'normal' shots.

I've been having the same problem all day. Although all three of my images are RGB jpegs. I've tried reuploading them and indicating replace but to no avail, the remain "processing". What is the solution? just wait??

No, it is not related to black and white images and it is not a new problem. It happens to all images and I can't remember when it didn't happen. It is a Smugmug "feature" and all you can do is wait and they correct themselves. Been this way for a long time.

This may happen or it may not. I'm checking a gallery I uploaded a few days ago for any 'stuck' images, but I remember from a few months ago you could wait days and it wouldn't fix itself. ne_nau.gif

I'd delete them and re-upload if you need them up now.

I've uploaded well over 500,000 photos and I can't remember this being a serious issue except when it's been broken in the last few months. If you're uploading during peak times, it can take a few minutes to process the photos, but nothing like this. If you've always experienced this, it's not normal and I'd contact the help desk.

I really don't think what I have is the "usual" Processing Image problem.
If I wait the images are simply deleted, dot.
If I retry I get the same syndrome over and over.

The Smugmug support team themselves couldn't upload those black&white pictures - they report "they are having trouble with them".
They are all coming from this chain: Canon 5D M2 RAW - Photoshop Camera Raw (B&W) - Photoshop (grayscale mode).
A simple "resave" of each picture with a tool solved the issue (don't know the name of this tool).
The new versions are still using graygamma2.2 color space, but can be uploaded without issue.
I guess the issue is related to some file header or whatever, I hope the bug is reported somewhere to be fixed at some point. What is sure is that it is 100% reproducible with my pictures...

This sounds like an uploading issue. headscratch.gif Have you checked your upload log?

    Good idea indeed!
Actually it is full of uploads with status in 'Error' and corresponding thumb showing alert 'Tried and failed 10 times :('.
Support conclusion so far is that it is linked to the usage of graygamma2.2 color space while Smugmug is not supposed to support it officially:

I'd try uploading unedited jpgs of those if you have them, or create some rgb jpgs just for testing purposes.

Our 'processing image' errors are different than yours. Ours upload fine, just never appear, or takes days to.
