Sounds like the electrical connections between the flash and the camera body aren't making good contact for some reason. Try cleaning the contacts with contact cleaner, or gently with a pencil erase maybe?

What happens if you set the camera to "P" mode?

Those functions only work through the camera menu with the newer 580EXII flash units, not the older 580EX.

Ironically I have been having the same issue with my 580EX II on both my 5DmkII and my 1DmkIII. Though Randy is correct about those options, I have found that it was the contacts causing the problem for me. I thought it initially was an issue with the Hotshoes on my cameras but the contacts are just making a poor connection, ultimately turing the 580 into a "dumb flash" (IE: no control outside of manual mode)

I used a cotton swab and some rubbing alcohol and that seems to work but occasionally it will still not register. After a bit of fidgeting it will re-engage and stay that way. Kind of odd....
