Hi Smugmug,

I want to enable family and friends to download an entire gallery for free. How do I do this?

For example - this gallery: http://images.luke-k.com/Private

    Hi Luke

As long as you set 'Protected' to "No" in the Gallery Settings, right-click downloading will be permitted for visitors, which means they can download each image in the Gallery :-) However, only you can click Tools > Download All, which generates a Zip file link that is sent to your email address. After receiving this download URL, you could then share it with those who you want to download the entire Gallery :-)

I have a similar situation and got the same answer from the SM as you got. However, there is a better way to do this so that someone can download the photos all at once for free.

First, set your pricing so that only "Gallery Download" is available. Choose the size you want to be available. For me it is Hi-Res.

Second, password protect the gallery so that only the people you want to can download the images. Without a password it is possible for people to find your gallery even if it is "unlisted". Obviously, this step is optional.

Third, create an "At Cost" coupon. Give the coupon code to your friends and family.

Now, when they sign into the gallery they can select "Buy > All Digital Downloads". In the shopping cart they enter the Coupon Code which will allow them to buy the digital downloads "at cost", which is $0.00 (zero).

They still have to enter their address and credit card info. But nothing will get charged to them since the cost is zero.

A few minutes later they will get an email from SM with a link to a zip file containing all the photos.

Its a bit of a hack, but it works. I used it for the first time yesterday and it worked great.

This should work but most folks don't like the idea of entering their CC and personal info for something that is free.

For an account owner owner, requesting the download .zip file then sending the file in an email to anyone that needs it might be less of a hassle.

If it's a public gallery, you can also guide them to use one of the third party downloaders like albumfetcher, rapidfetcher, smugloader, etc. This will be especially useful if they want to download multiple galleries and do it regularly.
