When I contribute photos to the paper for high school sports, can they in turn sell my photos? Do I relinquish copyright to my shots when I send them shots for games?

    What does your contract say?

One local paper (not the one I work for) says basically anything you submit is theirs and they can make any kind of money after you submit without having to pay you anything in addition.

My paper, was on the phone with the Photo Editor the other day who was saying, "Just make sure you keep YOUR business cards on hand so if anyone wants to buy pictures they can go to your website and do so."

My contract says they can republish anywhere without my consent or additional payment... So if it shows up Nationally, I get one rate, regardless.

Agree with the above. Most papers will default to at least an unrestricted use unless you have them re-work that. Why shouldn't they? Usually people are jumping at the chance to "be published". Whether or not they assume copyright, they may still have default language that allows them to use or sell however they want.

if my papers print my pics then they reserve the right to sell them. However my editor has sent people to me instead of having them buy from the paper.
If you signed a stringer contract it should say on there. If you didn't sign a contract & are not getting paid then I'd tell them not to do it or pay me. If they are not going to pay you then don't waste your time sending them all those pics.
