Why does my security system keep sending up a flag that says {firefox is using an unusually high amount of memory as high as 390 mb } is this necessary for them to use so much ?

My Firefox 7.0.1 eventually climbs to >500meg and scrolling is really jerky. I close it and reopen and the
memory at start is about 50meg. Been going on for some time.
