I would crop much tighter. If the players are not directly impacting the play, cut them out of the shot like in #4. A lot of dead space in these. several of the shots seem to be underexposed to me.

my general comment is: shoot more portrait orientation. The majority of shots (and your shots 2-5) have more vertical component than horizontal. Shooting landscape leaves too much dead space on the sides and you press body parts up against the frame (or cut off feet entirely). As mentioned you got some nice action but faces are not exposed well. I think you're making some nice progress. For next game:
1) shoot portrait orientation
2) brighten your exposure so faces are better exposed

But you're definitely on the right track.
I was using ISO 2000. Do you recommend bumping up to ISO 2500 or 3200 next time? I am shooting with a Canon 7D and Canon 70-200mm F2.8L. Or should I just bump up the exposure in Lightroom 3?

Thanks for the feedback. I processed the photos in Photo Mechanic and only had a couple of minutes to send out to meet the newspapers deadline.

General rule. 7D can handle 3200 and you are much better off getting the exposure right (using all the bits in the camera) than doing it in post (where you've already lost data to 0x00 because you under exposed). Especially if you are shooting jpeg.
Where in NC are you. We just moved to Greensboro about 5 months ago...
