Whether its a tip or not... Here is a great way to light up a pumpkin for a picture.
Just stick a speedlite in the back of it!

We just put a candle in ours......and used second curtain sync: 30 seconds @ f8

But I like your idea too.

Use a ziploc bag and drop the flash right in... No ziploc needed for puppies.
