Right-click not working with image search

After months of whining about my images not showing up in Google image search, now EVERY one of them is there. I thought that would be good news, but now I'm not so sure.

The problem is they are all right-clickable, and anyone can download them. I have right-click protection on my galleries (I know it's not foolproof, and really only a warning), but with Google image search, not even a warning comes up. The image shows nice and big, and you can see my SmugMug site under it, but you can right-click the image and save it.:cry

Is there something I have set wrong or is this happening to everyone?

I use a small watermark, but it could easily be edited out in PhotoShop. If I use a bigger watermark, then it's hard to appreciate the images.

How are others handling this?

Thanks,

Jean

Right click protection can only work within your gallery page. We don't have any way to apply it to external services, like Google Image search.

A centered watermark is the only thing I can think of for this. You could fade it out more so it's not as apparent while still being present.

Another thing you can do is also limiting the maximum size to medium. There's advantages and disadvantages to your images getting indexed. And you've discovered the biggest disadvantage. :(

I'm not too happy with being in Google's image search at all. I've gone and watermarked all my images across the center but it still stinks that it's now a free-for-all to download images. Google does offer a way to prevent images from appearing in the Google image search, but unfortunately you have to add code to your robots.txt file, which we can't access.

I thought we could access it through the webmasters tools, no?

You can easily with one click tell google to stay away - control panel, settings tab - hello world, NO. Holler for help, happy to assist :D

    Andy,

Isn't that for the whole gallery though? I think they're saying they just don't want their images in IMAGE search, not web search. At least with web search, it brings you to SmugMug. With image search, it's easy to right-click and save.

I know it's true, though, that once you put anything on the internet, someone, somehow, can get it, in spite of one's best efforts.

Right-click protection in general is just a mild deterrent. It can't help with advanced browser features for saving photos or against folks taking screenshots.
That's why we're offering a multi layered approach by not just allowing to restrict the display size that's available for viewing, but also providing our watermarking option for Pro users. With the 'largest size' set to a smaller size and a full size semi transparent watermark set up, photos are protected as good as they can be. Plus if the watermark contains your name or site address, you're getting free advertising if people save and post the photos elsewhere.
Those that print photos for themselves even with a watermark on it, I doubt you'd be selling any prints to in the first place.

For users still worried that certain people will try to save photos no matter what, they might be better of to not upload certain photos to the internet.

    Sebastian,
All that you say is true, but not uploading photos kind of defeats the whole purpose of using SmugMug, doesn't it? I do have a Pro account, and I have used the watermarking. The issue I have is for artwork that I do want to sell, but is too small to watermark. This is digital art that is used for online advertising. Unfortunately, although it was offered for sale, many companies simply helped themselves to the image. That's why it would be helpful to be able to watermark smaller images. I don't understand why SmugMug doesn't allow it, but I guess they have their reasons.headscratch.gif

Selling small-sized digital art and trying to protect it while showing it is next to impossible. Avatar images are rampant with copyright issues and theft. And it's one of the reasons no one tries to target that market.

    What Jean said... :D
I'm more upset with Google than anything else. Since I have a custom domain, so I'm starting to wonder if there's a way for me to access a robots.txt file after all...

That's not possible. You can only keep all search engines out by setting hello world to no. It's not possible for you to edit the robots file nor can you exclude just specific search engines.

Are you aware that right click protection doesn't protect your photos? It is easily circumvented; if an image is shown in a browser it is available for anyone to grab.

I'm aware, but right click protection was at least a deterrent.

It is, but very, very mild. Anyone with js blocked will have it blocked. Images free on the net are just that--free. No one cares about copyrights out there.

You wouldn't be happy to see what the current one is if you could:
    http://www.submitplus.com/freetools/tools/robots-txt-checker/

For my custom domain it's the following joke:
    User-agent: zombies
    Disallow: /brains

    User-agent: werewolves
    Disallow: /villagers

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /
