Facebook comments !?

Hi there,

I was just happily browsing around smugmug, stumbled upon an other users page and was quite surprised that after I click "add comment" I was already logged in with my facebook account and saw my profile pic looking at me. I have never seen this work on my smugmug page! How can you enable this kind of facebook commenting for galleries or images? :scratch

You have facebook enabled for your login - see your control panel, settings tab.
So when you leave a comment, you're identified by your facebook login. It's still not a facebook comment though. It's a SmugMug comment.

thanks for the response, but, the wired thing is, that if I hit add comment on my galleries, I am not identified by my facebook login but on other users galleries (I checked some others meanwhile) I am.

Also tried with different facebook logins and browsers now -> the same. I never see a facebook profile pic on my page if I try to add comments...

Hi again,

I'll prepared a screenshot. It seems to happen only on my galleries and seems independant from the facebook login setting.

I am logged out of SmugMug and logged in to facebook.

The upper screenshot is what I get when I comment on other users SmugMug images, galleries. Nice!

The lower screenshot shows what happens if I hit add comment on any place on my SmugMug galleries. No Facebook identification. Same browser, different tab.



Any clues?

Thank you for sending that screenshot along.

I talked with a few other heroes and we are all having the same problem, we can't replicate this at all. Everytime we login to our personal accounts with Facebook logins and then try to comment on your site, our personal sites or random sites we come across, we all see this:

We can't get the 'logged in with Facebook' message to appear. I even tried from my wife's personal SmugMug account, she isn't an employee so she doesn't have admin rights just to make sure and nothing is appearing.

If you disallow SmugMug access to your Facebook page, does the issue still happen? The steps to remove SmugMug are here:

1 - Please login to Facebook and click on Account in the upper right and then click on Privacy Settings

4 - Click on the 'X' next to SmugMug and then on the window that pops up, click on 'Remove'

5 - If done successfully, you will see a box pop up saying you have removed SmugMug, click 'Okay' and SmugMug will disappear from the list.

Once you do this, please clear your cache and cookies and then sign in into your SmugMug account and try posting again.

Hi,

Thanks for the tip on removing the SmugMug app from facebook, which gave me another different behaviour. I get a Login with facebook button next to the add comment field, and if I clck on it I am asked if a would allow the SmugMug app access to facebook.

But, I think I found a pattern behind all of that.. The difference is the domain...

To see yourself automatically logged in to comment with your facebook identity you have to do all of the following:

1. Have the SmugMug app installed in facebook
2. Be logged out of SmugMug
3. Be logged in to Facebook
4. surf to a SmugMug page without custom domain like .smugmug.com or use the browse button on SmugMug front page
5. hit add comment, it takes a second ...

...Et Voila -> You can comment with your Facebook Identity

There is no way (as far as I found out) to comment with facebook identities if
* you have custom SmugMug domains
* without having SM app installed on facebook
* you are logged in with SmugMug


Which does not really make sense to me ... because..

* the seldom cases where it would be possible for you to comment with your facebook identity force you to install the SmugMug app (who would do that just for writing a comment?)
* in all other cases especially with a custom domain, you won't ever get the possibility to comment with your facebook identity
* its confusing



Maybe I forget something but coming back to my initial question. Is it right that it's not intented nor possible that people can comment on my pictures with their facebook identities if I have a custom domain?

Let me try to clarify things a bit.

1. If you're logged into your SmugMug account, that's the identity you're using on comments. It should look like shown in Ryan's screenshot:

No Facebook option is available as your SmugMug identity is used.

That also works on custom domains.

2. If you're logged into Facebook, but not into SmugMug, you should see the blue Facebook login button for non custom domains. You do not need to have the SmugMug Facebook app installed to use the option.
Upon clicking the Facebook login button, you'll be asked to give your permission that we can access your "basic information" and send you an email (to allow the person you leave a comment with to get back to you).

3. If you're not logged into Facebook and SmugMug, you should see the Facebook login button show as in 2.

Note that it may take a couple of seconds for the Facebook button to show as I think it's loaded last.

As far as I can see, this isn't an option on custom domains at this point. I'll check with the developer to make sure.

The non custom domain gallery I used was this one:

I did my test in Google Chrome on Win7.

If you have further questions, could you include links to specific galleries you were looking at and what browser version and operating system you use.

Thanks for the clarification. These are basically all the observations that I made too... But it was quite hard for me figuring out what was happening and why.

Actually my target was to let other people comment with their facebook idetities on my galleries.

I saw that commenting with facebook identities (your points 2. and 3.) was working on other galleries (it was just coincidence, that i tried with noncustom domains) but not on my galleries, and I understand now, that it doesn't work on my galleries because I have a custom domain.

So, the only question that I have left is, if this feature will be made available for custom domains too someday?
