Yeah, martial arts demos can be really tough. They're so often held in dimly lit gyms, and if you can't get right down on the floor, that makes it even tougher. Anyway, pretty good shots. 5 turned out very well, and I love all of the flying boards in #4, though it would of course be a better shot if you didn't cut most of the guy's leg off. Can't always have everything, though.

FWIW, I would not have shot this using flash. IMO, this sort of indoor, no flash, low light, sport shooting requires an F2.8 lens or better (prime lenses rule here), a shutter speed fast enough to stop whatever the action is, ie 1/320th or faster, and whatever ISO it takes to get 'er done......depending on what the sensor can perform at in your particular camera body.

Flash on something like this just ruins the shot.....glare, shadows, weird flatness to everthing, reflections off stuff, etc.

Not putting you down, just commenting on the photos.

That sounds worth a try, I understand the flash can flatten, overexpose, etc... but I had to shoot from bleachers. I wish I had time During the show to experiment more, it it flys by... Quite literally.

I'm not a pro and I've only been shooting girls gymnastics for 3 seasons. Never allowed to use flash, and sometimes have to shoot across an entire gym with my 70-200/2.8 in order to capture vault or beam. For an event like yours, whether I got there early enough or not, as soon as I arrived, the camera would have been out, and I would have been taking test shots of people in order to dial in the settings for the existing conditions.
