Canon 400mm 2.8 version 1 discontinued ?

I WAS saving my pennies for the 400 2.8 to apparently learn that the new II has taken it's place and version I is discontinued ? That is a pretty hefty price jump. I'm going to need more pennies :scratch

    You can get a good used one for $6-7K I'll bet. I don't have the latest version of this lens, but mine works great and I have no inclination to replace it. (And no, it is not for sale...)
