Finally Had The Guts To Charge For An Outdoor Session

Hi Peoples:

I've been in the far interior of Mexico for several weeks for work. I've really missed this forum, looking at, commenting on and posting photos.

This young lady hadn't had senior portraits done yet and wanted to do so before all the fall color went away. Having practiced most of the summer, I finally worked up enough courage to actually charge for a session and we went out to the park this morning. I'm REALLY hoping she likes them.

The following are some samples from the various scenes we did. C and C most welcome!

Nods to zoomer on this one for giving me the graffiti idea and hats of to John in NY for making me realize that the background CAN be in focus!

Excellent set! #4 is my favorite. Did you use a reflector, off-camera flash or a combination of both?

"guts"? Dude, your work is beautiful! Nothing to be ashamed at charging for thumb.gif

I like the set. My main impression is that the lens is a little soft (even when viewed at full size), although they do look much sharper when viewed on your flicker stream than here (Dgrin mods, WHY is this happening all the time recently? Never used to be a problem... what is the forum doing to resize/rez embedded pix?). For some reason, though, I don't actually mind it in some of these - it's got a film quality that i really like, actually!

The only one I have real reservations about is 2 - I like her, but I find the houses in the bg distracting; they pull me out of the rather "bucolic" rest of the setting and suddenly it's.... suburbia. It would be easy enough to minimize that with a little bit of discreet cloning. I don't think you'd even need to lose it completely, just those prominent windows and gable directly above her head (and maybe the far right windows minimized). Sheer cloning is a good friend... ;)

Graffitti wall works a treat. Did you tell her to wear a matching shirt, or was that just good luck? :D

Thank-you! All were done with an off camera flash and shoot through umbrella. Some day I hope to get a voice activated reflector and add that to the mix!:D

    Thanks Mum!

Although I do have a lens in my collection that seems to be a bit soft with this camera, I'm thinking some of the softness was due to the weather that day. It had rained early AM and there was a pretty heavy foggy haze all over the park we were at. Not sure if it was 100% the cause, but am pretty sure it contributed.

Funny, I was tempted to clone out the house and now that you mention it, I think I will and re-post. Thanks for making up my mind for me!

She had brought the pink top with her so that part was luck. I just made sure to place her in the spot to take advantage of the pink graffiti. Did you notice her hand resting above/ touching the heart in the oter? I will take credit for that.:D

    Nicely done Bryce.thumb.gif

The only one where the softness/OOF seems a problem to me is # 4. The others are MORE than acceptable.

They are all a little soft in focus on the young lady's face except for the first one and I wouldn't be so bothered by that if other areas of the frame weren't. Perhaps the lens has a back focus issue that can be corrected with most bodies..
Other than that they are gorgeous well composed shots. :D
