Two shots from this weekend at a great tournament at the Naval Academy. Unfortunately, sun was going low and not much room on the side/endlines. I was getting what I could get--and got these two. Very different from my normal shots. I think I like them. Wondering if they work for anyone else.

This was at 200mm zoom (on a crop body) at about 10 yards...

I've got a million shots with her face, so here's one that breaks the rule...

#1 doesn't tell me anything, but #2 is a winner for me. You have the ball in the crosse, the goal, and good body action. Nice muscle tone showing, and I like the twist in her torso. I think it's a good energy shot, and I like the dof.

Nor me. Why do you think you like it?

Thanks for the feedback guys. #1 is certainly not the usual sports formula -- no ball in the shot/no real action/movment. But, the girl in the center of this shot is a real nice kid, so that may be influencing me. She plays defense, which may or may not be clear from this shot--but I like how the goalie is looking over her shoulder--that's what gives the shot some context (admittedly, not much though...)

However--and this probably sounds wierd--this shot reminds me of old Soviet/East Bloc art/propaganda with very strong looking characters. That style always seem to be with a upwards looking perspective--which I also think I have here. Her features/hairdo are in that clean/spartan look they always had.

Oh well, maybe this is one that only I, or her parents, would really care for.
    Regards

You do know you're really reaching, right, Will? :D
One point you raise is noteworthy though. I'll admit to being a Homer. When I'm shooting HS sports, I'm typically concentrating on "my" team. Usually, I'm focusing on the attack, too. I really have to remind myself periodically to go back down the field and pick a defender to stay with for a while.

    John:

You're definately right. Probably watching all the field hockey games this fall did it to me...mwink.gif

    Better?

Most of the time, I'm just focusing on "my" team as well. Usually I'm trying to make sure I end up gettings some shots of every player. It's easy with the team's primary players, but with some of the other players who see less play time, it can be hard to catch them in decent shots. Fortunately, I can usually get out to several of the games and can have an idea of who I don't have much of before I head out.

Also, with the lower fall sun, I find myself much more restricted regarding where I can shoot from and not be looking into the sun or having too many shadows. Usually I end up shooting one half at the offensive end, and one half on the defenders.
    Regards
